Los satélites de comunicación Iridium tienen tres antenas muy pulidas de forma plana separadas 120 grados. A veces, una de las antenas refleja la luz solar directamente hacia la Tierra creando una brillante falsa estrella por algunos segundos. A este fenómeno se le conoce como Iridium Flares.
Esta aplicación muestra en tiempo real donde se encuentra cada satélite Iridium, predice cuando se producirán los siguientes flares desde la posición del observador y permite, desde el localizador 3D, situar el punto exacto en el cielo nocturno.
The Iridium communication satellites have a peculiar shape with three polished door-sized antennas, 120° apart and at 40° angles with the main bus.
Occasionally, an antenna reflects sunlight directly down at Earth, creating a predictable and quickly moving illuminated spot on the surface below of about 10 km diameter. To an observer this looks like a bright flash, or flare in the sky, with a duration of a few seconds.
